Anna Maria

The idyllic city of Anna Maria lies in Manatee County and occupies the northern part of its namesake island, Anna Maria Island. People who visited Anna Maria said the blissful escape is as good as the Bahamas.

According to some historians, the city was named because of the strong winds in the area as the German term for wind is “Maria.” However, in reality, it was the former Tampa mayor, Madison Post, who named the island for his wife, Maria, and his sister-in-law, Anna. In the early 1900s, the area was developed by a real estate developer from St. Petersburg, Charles Roser.
