Gulfport is a waterfront city surrounded by Boca Ciega Bay. For years, artists and other creative types have flocked to Gulfport, giving it a delightful quirkiness. However, there is a serious side to Gulfport. The highly regarded Stetson College of Law’s main campus is located here.
Gulfport has been known by many names in history. In 1884, the city was originally named after Hamilton Disston and was heavily advertised because it was expected to be a terminal point for a railroad that Disston was building. The railroad never materialized but the marketing campaign created a Gulfport real estate boom. The city subsequently changed its name to Bonifacio, then to Veteran City and finally settled to Gulfport in 1910.
Gulfport’s earlier homes were made by neighbors for neighbors using local timber. A few of the older fishing cottages still remain in the older parts of town. The gorgeous beach city’s main attraction is its arts and crafts shops, museums, theater and galleries. The city has a wide variety of eateries that offer local and international flavors, including Cuban, Chinese, seafood, steak houses and hot dog parlors.
With sunny weather, pristine beaches and a lot of family friendly attractions, including water skis and jet skis, orange groves and aquariums, Gulfport can easily become one of your favorite home destinations.
