Bird Key, also fondly called a “jewel” of Sarasota, lies south of the John Ringling Causeway, between St. Armand’s Key and mainland Sarasota.
In the early 1900s, Bird Key was a tiny island rising only a few feet about the surrounding grasslands. In 1911, Thomas Martin Worcester of Cincinnati began to develop this key by dredging a channel through the flatland and raising the level of the land. He was the first one to build a luxurious home on any island in the Sarasota Bay region. Later, Bird Key became home to John Ringling North, nephew of the famous circus tycoon John Ringling.
In 1959, its real estate development started in earnest when Arvida Realty planned to make 291 waterfront lots and 220 off-water sites. The development was considered very advanced for its time as it included an underground electric utility system, with 146 miles of electrical cables.
For over 50 years, Bird Key has witnessed rapid development. Currently, it is one of the most sought-after luxurious areas in Sarasota home for sale.
Bird Key is home to the Bird Key Park which is a perfect spot to watch the sunset, take your dog out for a walk, go kayaking or have a picnic. Many sitting areas provide a beautiful view of the Sarasota Bay.
A Bird Key home is where you will find the climate is always pleasant and the sound and smell of the sea is everywhere. Who doesn’t want to live on a beautiful tropical island?
